Analysis: Ocado co-founders square up for online delivery battle

Waitrose has come out fighting in the looming online grocery battle with M&S by linking with an unknown tech start-up launched by Ocado co-founder Jonathan Faiman. Will it give Waitrose the punching power to upset its soon-to-be ex-partner?

Waitrose announced late last week that it had struck a deal with unknown technology company Today Development Partners (TDP) to help it rapidly expand its online grocery business to £1bn within three years.

While the deal has been hailed in some quarters, little-to-nothing is known about TDP other than the identity of one of its co-founders: Jonathan Faiman, formerly of Ocado.

TDP is not registered with Companies House, has no website and no real prior experience or form to draw on beyond Faiman. The deal therefore could be a risk for Waitrose, as it begins to wind down its existing supply deal with Ocado, which finishes in September 2020.

Who will win in the fight of the online grocery delivery services?
