Falls in clothing and food prices were the main contributors to the UK’s inflation rate dropping to 0% last month.
- Consumer Prices Index fell from 0.1% in May
- Fashion prices drop 0.4%
- Food prices dropped 2.2% in year to June
The Consumer Prices Index dropped from 0.1% in May, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed today.
Clothing and footwear prices fell by 0.4% between May and June, compared with a 0.6% rise in the same period last year.
“Prices usually fall between May and June as the summer Sales begin but last year the average prices of a number of products rose,” the ONS said. “The main downward effect came from garments, particularly women’s outerwear.”
Food and non-alcoholic drinks prices fell by 0.2% between May and June compared with a rise of 0.1% in the same period in 2014. “The downward effect came from bread and cereals, and sugar, jam, syrups, chocolate and confectionery,” the ONS said.
In the year to June, food prices fell 2.2%, the ONS said.
