Morrisons has teamed up with an app to offer boxes of unsold food that has reached its best before date, in a bid to cut down on food waste.
Customers of the grocer will be able to use the Too Good to Go app to purchase boxes of unsold fruit and vegetables, bakery and deli items worth at least £10 for as little as £3.09 across all of Morrisons 494 supermarkets nationwide from November 26.
This follows a trial with the app and is part of Morrisons’ pledge to reduce food waste across its network by 50% by 2030.
Morrisons said it expects to distribute 350,000 boxes of unsold food in 2020, which will reduce CO2 emissions by 882 tonnes.
The contents of the boxes sold through the Too Good to Go app will be “revealed when picked up from the local supermarket”.
Market street director at Morrisons, Jayne Wall, said: “We are using technology to help us reduce food waste and to help more people afford to eat well. It will also mean we waste less food this Christmas as it will find a home for products that can’t be sold after the festive period.”
Too Good to Go launched in June 2016 and currently has over 1.9 million users. It said it has saved over 1 million meals and prevented 2.5 million kg of CO2 emissions.
It has partnered with a number of restaurants and cafes including Yo Sushi and Caffè Nero, but its partnership with Morrisons is the first time a national supermarket has signed up.
