Morrisons has joined forces with online food delivery business Just Eat to launch the UK’s first takeaway inside a supermarket.
The grocer will open a Bombay Bites Express concession at its Victoria Shopping Centre store, in Bradford, on Saturday, as it continues to develop its in-store proposition.
Morrisons has already penned tie-ups with the likes of Timpson, Amazon and Doddle as part of a drive to enhance its “useful and popular services” offer and give shoppers more reasons to visit its bigger sheds.
The supermarket giant is also building on its local credentials and has embarked on a tour of the UK to find at least 200 new British food suppliers within the next year alone.
Customers at Morrisons’ Victoria Shopping Centre store will be able to dine in-store from the Bombay Express concession, collect their takeaway order during their grocery shop or have it delivered via Just Eat.
Indian street food specialist Bombay Bites, which is also Bradford-based, will open the in-store takeaway from 8am until 8pm Monday to Saturday and 9.30am until 4pm on Sundays.
The concession will create 10 new jobs.
Hot menu concept
As well as serving up Indian breakfasts, Bombay Bites will offer main dishes including curries, Indian rolls and dosas, a crispy crepe stuffed with potato, fried onion and spices.
Retail Week understands that Morrisons and Just Eat, which works with 68,500 takeaway restaurants in 13 countries, plan to roll out the concept across more of its supermarkets across the UK.
Morrisons director of local solutions Rebecca Singleton said: “We have listened to the customers who shop in our Victoria store and they told us they’d love a takeaway service as an extra reason to shop with us.”
Just Eat’s UK managing director Graham Corfield said: “At Just Eat we love innovation. We have over 27,000 restaurant partners across the UK, but this is the first to open inside a supermarket.
“Bombay Bites is what Just Eat is all about, producing great food at the heart of the community, and thanks to Morrisons we have a local business expanding. This is a perfect hat-trick for us all.”
Bombay Bites director Samir Kader added: “We are thrilled that we have the opportunity to partner with large and trusted brands such as Morrisons and Just Eat, so we can really bring something new into the food industry.”
