Some of retail’s biggest names will close many stores early this Sunday when England battles Spain in the Euro 2024 men’s football final.
Grocery giants Tesco and Sainsbury’s have both said they will shut convenience stores earlier than usual in England that evening so staff can watch the big game.
Tesco will close its Express convenience network in England at 7.30pm rather than the typically later times of 10pm or 11pm. The match is scheduled to kick off at 8pm.
Sainsbury’s convenience stores and petrol filling stations in England will also close at 7.30pm on Sunday.
Sainsbury’s chief retail and technology officer Clodagh Moriarty said: “We want to give our colleagues the chance to tune in live and cheer on England with friends and family.
“The atmosphere in stores is electric after last night’s win and everyone is working hard across the business to make sure our customers can find everything they may want for the match.”
England’s participation in the final may prompt demand for party food and drink as millions of people watch the historic game at home.
However, not all big retailers’ c-stores will close early. Morrisons, for instance, said it has no plans to do so.
