Retailers including Sainsbury’s have been hit by a biscuit shortage because of a fire at a packaging plant that supplies United Biscuits, owner of the McVitie’s and Jacobs brands.
Sainsbury’s has displayed signs above empty shelves (pictured) that read: “We are experiencing supply problems on a number of products across the biscuit range… We are working with our suppliers to rectify the issue as soon as possible.” Asda said it was also affected but it had “a contingency in place for any eventuality”. A United Biscuits spokeswoman said: “We’re at the stage where we have new packaging films coming on stream and the supermarket shelves should fill up again over the next week or two.”
