Sainsbury’s is the stand-out performer in the Big Four supermarkets winning 16% market share and generating a 7.4% sales jump in the 12 weeks to November 10, Nielsen data shows.
Sainsbury’s remains the biggest out-performer of the Big Four, said Shore Capital analyst Clive Black.
He said the data shows the supermarket has “slightly” positive like-for-like sales currently unlike the remaining three.
Tesco held the biggest slice of the food market at 28.7%, but that was down from 2.8% in the comparable period last year. Asda took second place with a 16.4% market share as sales rose 5.7%. Sainsbury’s won the third biggest share at 16%.
Morrisons took a 10.7% market share and grew sales by 0.9%. The supermarket’s performance has improved but it continues to underperform the market.
Sales at discount supermarket Aldi rocketed 38.9% in the 12 weeks to November 10, when it took a 2.6% share of the market. Waitrose won 4.1% share of the market and sales surged 10.1%.
In addition, the data from Nielsen showed sales slowed in the last four weeks, growing 2% year-on-year for the four weeks to November 10 against 2.9% growth in the previous four week period ending October 24, as shoppers save for Christmas.
