Sainsbury’s is to sponsor the British Athletics summer series of events, following its successful support for last year’s Paralympics.
The Sainsbury’s Summer Series will comprise three athletics events in summer, culminating in the Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games at The Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park from July 26-July 28.
The partnership is part of Sainsbury’s support for the British Athletics Paralympic programme, which has already included £2m of funding for schools, clubs and organisations to nurture the next generation paralympians.
The first two events are the Sainsbury’s Grand Prix in Birmingham, and the Sainsbury’s British Championships in Birmingham. Olympic heroes Mo Farah and Greg Rutherford have confirmed to compete at the Grand Prix.
Sainsbury’s chief executive Justin King said: “Last summer the whole country was inspired and uplifted as we celebrated the very best of human sporting achievement through the Olympics and Paralympics. It was truly a summer like no other.
“As the first ever sole-sponsor of the Paralympics, Sainsbury’s saw firsthand the power of sport to bring people and communities together. We said at the time that we saw our involvement as much more than a one-off sponsorship – we wanted to be part of the movement, and to play our part in ensuring a lasting legacy building on the momentum created last summer.”
