McClenaghan takes the role four months after previous trading director Ian McLeod climbed into the driving seat as chief executive, following the departure of former boss David Hamid.

Halfords produced a strong set of maiden preliminary results in June. The bikes-to-car-parts retailer increased turnover by 8.6 per cent to£628.4 million in the 52 weeks to April 1. Like-for-like sales for the period were up 8.9 per cent.
