Struggling music chain HMV is to close one of its most high profile stores at Brent Cross shopping centre in London.
HMV stores already closed
- Birmingham, Pallasades Centre
- Brighton, Western Road
- Croydon, North End
- Ealing Broadway
- Ilford
- Gatwick Airport North
- Glasgow, Sauchiehall Street
- Liverpool, Bold Street
- Nottingham Wheelergate
- Oldham
- Plymouth, New George Street
- Reading, Friar Street
Also set to close:
- Fopp Exeter
- Brent Cross
The retailer will not renew its lease when it expires at the end of March according to the Daily Mail. The exit is part of HMV’s decision to exit stores to cut costs but is surprising as the centre is high profile. Brent Cross attracts 15 million to 16 million shoppers each year.
HMV chief executive Simon Fox announced the store closure programme at the turn of the year after disappointing Christmas trading, where its UK & Ireland like-for-likes plummeted 13.6% in the five weeks to January 1.
The retailer is closing 40 of its 285 HMV stores and 20 of its 300 Waterstone’s shops as it aims to cut costs.
It has already shut 12 stores including Gatwick Airport North and Birmingham Pallasades Centre.
