Kingfisher is increasing the hourly pay rate for its B&Q and Screwfix employees by more than 8% year-on-year, from the beginning of the new financial year.
Both B&Q and Screwfix shopfloor workers will see their pay rise to £10.60 from April 1, 2023 – an 8.2% and 9.3% increase year on year respectively.
The raise puts employees aged between 18 and 20 at £3.11 more per hour than the national minimum wage and those aged between 21 and 22 at 42p more.
Screwfix employees based at stores within the M25 will receive an increase to £11.75 per hour, while B&Q workers based in certain London locations will earn up to £11.85 per hour, reflecting market conditions.
Both brands will also increase the staff discount on offer from 20% to 30% on energy-efficient products.
B&Q said it was investing £34m to improve pay for frontline staff and that it would maintain its policy on providing paid rest breaks, which it said was uncommon in retail and could be worth up to 70p per hour based on the hours worked – equivalent to an additional 6.6% pay.
A B&Q spokeswoman said: “In recognition of their hard work and in order to support our colleagues with the rising costs they face, this year’s pay award is one of our largest annual increases in recent years.
“The total investment of £34m will be focused on our lower-paid colleagues.
