Homebase says warm weather over the bank holiday weekend has resulted in its biggest sales week since Easter last year.
The home and garden retailer said more than half a million customers came through its doors over the most recent bank holiday weekend, and sales of barbecues, plants and outdoor paint soared.
Homebase said over the weekend sales of plants rose 20% compared with this time last year, indoor and outdoor paint sales grew 30%, outdoor storage rose 12% and it sold more than 22,000 barbecues.
The retailer also said it had seen sales pick up across its kitchens and bathrooms business, up 6% compared with last year.
Homebase chief executive Damian McGloughlin said: “After a tough winter and a slow start to spring, we’re now seeing strong performance and we’re confident the market is headed in the right direction.
“We know customers are still spending cautiously, but the promising uplift we’ve seen in sales gives us real confidence as we go into the peak summer months. Right across Homebase our team members and suppliers are working really hard to deliver the freshest plants, the best availability and brilliant deals for customers.”
The results follow “another year of investment and continued transformation”, according to the brand, with a new till system, a state-of-the-art forecast and replenishment system, and a shelving reset being implemented in recent months.
