Richard Hyman, the analyst who made his name as founder of Verdict Research, has become a strategic adviser to Deloitte’s consumer business practice.

Hyman, who has previously advised retailers including Marks & Spencer and Tesco, said he was excited to be taking on the role.

He said: “The era of booming consumer spending is behind us and a mature market such as the UK is not likely to see a return in the short term.

“Retail chief executives are facing a new market reality and will be asking questions over which direction to take their business.”

Hyman will continue to act as an adviser to Verdict.
