Rewe Group’s domestic discount chain Penny is asking brand and private-label suppliers for a contribution of 2% to 2.5% of their sales to support its refurbishment programme. Penny is offering for suppliers to be featured in promotions and special leaflets in return. Since the end of February, Penny has converted more than 200 of approximately 2,300 German stores to the new Düren model. Another 650 outlets will be refurbished annually over the next three years. The management expects Penny to break even again in 2015. According to insiders, Penny is currently making a loss of around $1m (£800,000) every day.
