JD Sports Fashion has bought rugby brand Canterbury Europe from administration.
JD has acquired the key trading assets and trade of Canterbury Europe along with the global rights to Canterbury and Canterbury of New Zealand for £6.5m in cash.
JD Sports also acquired Kooga Rugby in July and hopes that both acquisitions can be developed profitably and will generate royalty income for the business.
JD chairman Peter Cowgill said: “We are delighted with the acquisition of the Canterbury and Kooga brands, which will further diversify the group’s overall interests in the sports and related leisurewear markets.”
Canterbury was founded over a century ago in New Zealand and is a specialist in rugby apparel including technical and lifestyle products. It fell into administration last month after being hit by the weak pound and expanding unsuccessfully into new sports categories.
