John Lewis Direct chief made commercial director
The John Lewis Partnership has appointed Phil Hullah to the John Lewis board as commercial director.

The move marks a promotion for Hullah, who is at present managing director of John Lewis Direct. He will take up the post on October 2.

Chairman of the John Lewis Partnership Sir Stuart Hampson said: 'I am delighted to promote Phil to the board. He has overseen exceptional growth at John Lewis Direct over the past five years and will play a key role in deepening our customer insight, guiding John Lewis's marketing capability and continuing to oversee John Lewis Direct.'

Hullah joined the John Lewis Partnership in February 2001, when buy.com, which he helped to found, was bought by John Lewis. The acquisition provided the platform for John Lewis Direct, which has delivered strong growth and accounts for 7 per cent of John Lewis's sales and moved into profit earlier this year.

Hullah added: 'My challenge is to provide an even greater understanding of our customers' needs as John Lewis expands both geographically and online.'
