John Lewis has had another record week of sales, taking £110m in the week to Saturday December 12, the most the department store has ever taken in a week.

The figure is an 8% rise on John Lewis’ biggest week in 2007 and a 15% uplift on the same week last year.

John Lewis said records were seen across a number of branches and johnlewis.com also took the most for a single week.

Fashion brands, watches, sewing machines and gifts drove the performance as customers bought gifts for the family.

John Lewis said that men were being more organised in shopping for Christmas with beauty, jewellery and lingerie starting to peak early.

Table linen, decorations and cookware were strong performers over the week as shoppers prepared for the festive feast.

The retailer added that bigger household purchases saw “incredible growth”, in particular from fitted kitchens

John Lewis director of operational development Andrew Murphy said: “It is very exciting to be breaking records week after week. This would not be possible without all of the hard work our partners continue to put in to deliver the levels of service our customers rightly expect from us. The atmosphere in our branches is very festive as across the country people are out Christmas shopping, even men, although I am sure there will still be many who leave it until the last minute.”
