Online propels sales
Department store chain John Lewis continues to beat sales figures for the same period last year, with total sales up 10.3 per cent for the week to September 30.

Waitrose supermarket chain posted sales up 10.8 per cent, giving parent company John Lewis Partnership overall sales of£118.95 million for the nine weeks to September 30, compared with£107.49 million last year.

John Lewis director of selling support Rob Collins said the department store chain had delivered 'just shy of£50 million turnover for the week'.

He added that the best performers had been menswear, leisure and beauty with a 5 per cent rise against the same week last year.

The star performer was Johnlewis.com, which increased sales by 76.2 per cent over the period. Sales for the electricals and home technology category jumped 27.6 per cent.

Childrenswear and womenswear performed worst - down 7 per cent and 4.4 per cent respectively.

For Waitrose, chilled and prepared meals led the way, with a 12.7 per cent increase on the comparable week last year.

Collins said that the company had been working 'flat out' to build up stocks in the run up to Christmas.

He added that customer feedback on Christmas stationery had been 'extremely positive' and the more autumnal recent weather gave 'fantastic seasonal opportunities' to exploit.
