Sales at department store chain John Lewis rose 15.1% last week to £58.7m.

Stores notched up a 10% advance in turnover and sales at the online business jumped by 49%.

Sales in the home category, up 16.4%, powered performance in the week to September 25. The retailer’s value range did well as the new university year got under way and the latest catalogue inspired customers to spend, said John Lewis region B selling operations director David Barford.

Fashion sales rose 15.8%. Childrenswear did best, up 35%, and women’s outerwear rose 22%.

Electricals and home technology sales were ahead 12.6%, led by white goods which soared 24%.

Barford said: “Our customers are showing a real interest in all things new. The preparation for autumn is clearly under way.”

Sales at supermarket chain Waitrose climbed 9.6% to £91m in what retail director Tony Solomons said was a “particularly strong week”.

Earlier this week the grocer revealed it would price-match Tesco on 1,000 branded products. Solomons said: “Our new commitment will extend our appeal by offering excellent value on popular branded goods that customers buy most frequently.”
