John Lewis has reported flat sales from Sunday to Wednesday compared with last year, as the snow impacted footfall and sales.
Johnlewis.com however reported sales up 62.2% so far this week, as shoppers opted to order from home rather than brave the weather.
Director of selling operations Nat Wakely said: “This week has seen sales level with last year which reflects significant underlying strength, considering the adverse conditions. The snow has impacted both footfall and sales in shops where the weather has been particularly poor, however there has been some compensation in our multichannel proposition with johnlewis.com +62.2% week to date as customers unable to travel opt to shop online.
“Electrical and home technology is the star performer this week, as customers buy digital gifts and products such as televisions to ensure they make the most of this year’s festive entertainment.”
Key highlights from last week’s sales included outerwear, with hats, gloves and scarves selling every 20 seconds.
Women’s shoes had a record week with sales up 28% on last year.
Sewing machines are up 24% and craft kits up 101%.
John Lewis said last week alone it proactively checked over 116,000 prices to ensure it matched competitor offers.
