John Lewis has recorded a 10.5% uplift in sales this week with Christmas spending in full swing.
Figures released today show that sales grew 10.5% in the four days to the end of Wednesday boosted by gift purchases.
The Christmas party season is about to start with one handbag selling every 10 seconds and women’s party shoes up 16% on the previous week.
Strong sales of kitchen mixers, up 35% on last year in the last week, has been attributed to baking ahead of Christmas day.
In the perfume category, Paco Rabanne One Milllion is the top male fragrance with sales +25% on last year and, for women, sales of Viktor and Rolf Flowerbomb were up +40% on last year.
Nat Wakely, director of selling operations for John Lewis, said: “Trade this week is strong as shoppers continue to prepare their homes ahead of the arrival of guests and look forward to the start of the festive party season.
“The strong figures are up against weaker comparatives as the heavy snow this time last year began to impact parts of the UK. Nonetheless, good performances from home, gifting, fashion and beauty this week indicate that customers are well in the mood for Christmas at the start of December.”
John Lewis said it sold one pillow every 20 seconds last week and “also sold enough chairs and stools to replace all the seats in the Royal Albert Hall”.
