Department store chain John Lewis may extend its click and collect offering to enable customers to collect orders from other retailers.

John Lewis managing director Andy Street said he has begun discussions with several partners about the potential venture.

Speaking at the British Retail Consortium Symposium Street added: “We are forging partnerships with others.”

The retailer already offers a click and collect service through its grocery chain Waitrose, allowing customers to order items from John Lewis but pick it up in a Waitrose store.

Other retailers have already moved into offering click and collect by using other retail partners. Online fashion giant Asos offers customers the opportunity to collect their clothes from local convenience stores through the Collect+ service.

Coffee retailer Nespresso wants to introduce a click and collect service through petrol stations later this year while home shopping retailer N Brown is also looking at a click and collect offer.

Street also added that retailers with an online presence will only need 60 to 70 stores to cover the whole of the UK.

He warned: “The days of needing 200 stores to cover the UK are history.”
