Lidl is one of two key players in the discount sector, which is one of the few growth areas in grocery retailing. Lidl can discount very effectively due to the buying power it achieves across its limited ranges and through its no-frills operation, which minimises costs. Both Aldi and Lidl have benefited in recent periods from the ‘two nations’ phenomenon, whereby more promiscuous, value-conscious UK consumers are spreading out their shops between various retailers, to the benefit of the upper and lower ends of the market.

Lidl has long-term plans to operate 1,500 discount stores in the UK and is currently targeting 1,100 stores by 2025. As of early 2024, there were some 960 in the UK and around 12,400 Lidl stores worldwide.
