The Times claims that Livingstone is to force through a major refurbishment of Oxford Street. Recent polls show that suburban shoppers are staying away from central London.
In an effort to tempt back shoppers, the Mayor has appointed Ian Henderson, chairman of New West End Company, to head the proposal. The results are expected to be revealed by spring.
According to the Times report, the proposal includes the development of more flagship stores, hotels and restaurants. There are also plans to ease congestion by implementing transport improvements in the area.
Mr Livingstone is reportedly putting pressure on Westminster Council to give planning permission for the proposal.
