London retailers to reap 'huge benefits' of Night Tube service

Newly-elected London Mayor Sadiq Khan today revealed that overnight operations on Fridays and Saturdays will start on the Victoria and Central lines on August 19.

Tubes will run through the night on the Piccadilly, Jubilee and Northern lines in the autumn.

The overnight services had been due to start last September, but were delayed owing to disputes with unions, which led to several strikes by thousands of London Underground staff.

New West End Company managing director of operations Steven Medway believes the belated introduction of night operations will bring a string of benefits to businesses in the capital.

Medway said: “We welcome the news that the trade unions and London Underground have reached an agreement to provide Londoners with a 24-hour Tube service at weekends.

“This service will have huge benefits for businesses as well as visitors. It further bolsters the West End’s reputation as a world-class destination, beyond retail, across the food, beverage and entertainment sectors.

“As a global retail and leisure destination, reliable transport links are vital for the West End to continue to compete with other international entertainment districts.

“It provides another reason for people to choose to visit London’s West End in the evening and discover all the area has to offer.”

Khan added: “The Night Tube is absolutely vital to my plans to support and grow London’s night-time economy, creating more jobs and opportunities for all Londoners.

“The constant delays under the previous mayor let Londoners down badly. I have made getting the Night Tube up and running a priority.”
