Labour leader Ed Miliband has spoken out against the growth of supermarkets warning it is changing the face of the country.

Miliband said local people should have more of a say over what happens on their high-street according to The Financial Times and he said Labour would make the issue a priority in its wider policy review.

The Labour leader’s comments comes after violent protests last week against a new Tesco store in Bristol. Windows were smashed and police feared the new Tesco Express store was to be petrol-bombed.

Miliband told The FT: “I think people do worry about all of the high streets looking the same.” He added that people worried they had “no power against big corporations in this country”.

Tesco has about 30% of the British grocery market. It has 2,715 shops in the UK and plans to open 208 in the coming year.
