Capital Shopping Centres (CSC) has submitted a planning application for the Northumberland Street entrance of Eldon Square, Newcastle marking the next stage in the mall’s refurbishment.
The planning application includes reconfiguration and redevelopment of the entrance and two adjoining retail units, and the addition of an extended roof canopy over the new entrance.
Joint owners, CSC and Newcastle City Council, revealed in December that it plans to invest £22m in a modernisation programme of Eldon Square which will enhance existing malls by upgrading ceilings, entrances and interiors.
The mall enhancement is intended to increase the attractiveness of units for retailers and provide an enhanced sense of ‘arrival’ for Eldon Square’s 36 million annual shoppers.
CSC asset management director Martin Breeden said: “The scheme will add to the vibrancy and vitality of the city centre and build on Newcastle’s success as one of the UK’s best retail cities.”
Eldon Square is one of the largest city centre shopping centres in the UK, occupying 1.35m sq ft, with 151 stores. A decision on planning is expected by mid-August.
