Zavvi has apologised to shoppers after inadvertently emailing customers telling them they had won a VIP trip to watch the Champions League final in Madrid.
The online retailer blamed a “technical glitch” for the email, which may have been sent to its entire subscriber list.
Zavvi was holding a competition, in partnership with Mastercard, which offered two adults an all-expenses-paid two-night trip to the Champions League final between Liverpool and Tottenham.
The supposed winners who were contacted received an email which addressed them by name and told them they had won the prize.
The email read: “We here at Zavvi would like to wish you a huge congratulations as you have been chosen as the winner of our Mastercard competition, winning a VIP trip for two adults to attend the UEFA Champions League Final Madrid 2019.”
Following the email gaffe, which was reportedly sent to everyone who entered the competition, Zavvi put out a since-deleted tweet which read: “Apologies, we’re aware of the problem regarding the recent Mastercard Competition. We seem to have some technical issues and we’re currently looking into this.”
A spokesman for Mastercard said: “We are extremely disappointed with today’s events and our sympathies go to the many people who were wrongly contacted by Zavvi in connection to their competition.
“We have asked Zavvi to clarify how they are resolving as a matter of urgency.”
