However, the volume increased by 0.7 per cent month on month and rose 2.6 per cent on a year-on-year basis.
Food sales were up 3.1 per cent year on year and non-food showed a 2.1 per cent increase. Non-store sales growth was 5.4 per cent, the highest since April last year.
The total value of retail sales was up slightly (0.1 per cent) compared with last year. The average weekly value of sales in March was£4.5 billion.
Seymour Pierce analyst Rhys Williams said: 'Overall, the retail sector continues to struggle, with cash-take well down and promotions still needed to drive top lines sales.'
