Shop Direct boss Alex Baldock bows out

Retail’s rapidly revolving doors continued to spin today as Shop Direct unveiled that its head honcho Alex Baldock would leave the business next summer.

Baldock was a newcomer to retail when he took up the helm at Shop Direct, and under his five-year tenure the business has delivered consecutive rising profits and sales, all while undergoing a digital transformation.

It’s a testament to the value that a fresh perspective can have in the retail sector that someone with no previous experience could spearhead one of the most far-reaching digital transformations in recent years.

Baldock has regularly spoken about his lofty and long-term ambitions for Shop Direct, including a recent goal to overhaul its company culture to be much more agile, so his presence leading the business will no doubt be missed.

It remains to be seen whether Baldock will take up another retail tenure or leave the sector for pastures new alongside a variety of retail bosses including Anders Kristiansen, Simon Belsham and John Browett.

Also today, JD Sports’ founders are reportedly planning to float their latest venture Footasylum and Nisa named non-executive director Arnu Misra as interim chief executive as it unveiled a rise in first-half sales.
