British discount variety retailer Poundland that sells the majority of items at £1. The first pilot store opened in December 1990 following numerous rejections by landlords who had reservations about allowing a single-price store to operate, fearing it could adversely affect the local competition. Poundland acquired closest rival 99p Stores in 2015, which left Poundworld as its closest competitor until it went bankrupt in 2018. Since 2018, Poundland has been the category killer of the pound shop format in the UK.

Pepco Group reported that Poundland Group (comprising Poundland in the UK and Dealz outside the UK – the Republic of Ireland, Spain and Poland) sales increased 5.9% year on year on a reported basis to €2.23bn (£1.95bn) for the financial year to 30 September 2023 (FY2023), while UK and ROI sales increased 5.9% to €2.0bn (£1.74bn). The Poundland Group contributed 40% of the Pepco Group total revenue. Total Poundland Limited sales (UK, Republic of Ireland and Isle of Man) increased 11.7% to £1.77bn for the 53 weeks to 1 October 2023 (FY2023).
