As the last major record store on the high street its not surprising that the major labels are trying to prop up its credibility, but we all know the writing's been on the wall for some time. I hope for the sake of the staff and shareholders that HMV can turn it round, but I think its going to be an uphill struggle.

Perhaps though, in the midst of the gloom, we could see a small glimmer of light in the form of the return of the small, specialist record store. Rooting around in an Aladdin's cave like that isn't something you can replicate as easily on the web as you can with the likes of HMV.
