Today’s news from Tesco is very disappointing and it’s not good news from the customer’s perspective that Tesco is headline news again. We’ve always held the view that the biggest challenge facing Dave Lewis in his new role, is to rebuild trust in the brand internally and externally and to get customers to fall back in love with Tesco, so whilst his actions this morning demonstrate on his part a real commitment to resolving problems with vigour and thoroughness, this latest debacle will not help with creating customer and indeed colleague trust. It’s unfortunate, but true, that customers will see more negative headlines which will impact their faith in the retailer and the sector as a whole.

Whilst the investigation takes place and senior figures are suspended, spare a thought for the thousands of hard working and customer-facing Tesco colleagues working in stores today - on checkouts and counters – as they will be facing some difficult customer questions and dissatisfaction. It’s certainly not an easy day for those caught up in the crossfire.
