BRC figures reveal non-food prices still in decline
Retail prices fell in February by 0.67 per cent compared with February last year, according to the latest figures from the British Retail Consortium (BRC) Shop Price Index.

The prices for non-food items are 0.93 per cent lower than in February last year, the tenth consecutive month of price deflation in non-food. Food prices are 0.09 per cent lower than 12 months ago, the second month this year food prices have shown deflation.

Overall, shop prices in February fell by 0.1 per cent from January. The price of non-food items fell 0.48 per cent, while food prices increased by 0.7 per cent.

'These results reaffirm what we saw last month - that retail price deflation is back with a vengeance,' warned BRC director-general Kevin Hawkins. 'Prices were lower during February than in the sales and discounting of January.'

The Scottish Retail Consortium Shop Price Index for February showed overall prices in Scotland were 0.21 per cent higher than in January. However, this increase follows a month-on-month fall in January of 0.65 per cent compared with December.
