US DIY chain, Home Depot, is installing four self-checkout lanes in each of its 300 high-volume stores this year, with 500 more outlets scheduled for conversion next year.
It is believed to be the first time that a major home improvement retailer has opted for self-checkout and is part of the group's 'FAST' (front-end accuracy and service transformation) programme, which includes an upgrade to touchscreen point-of-sale systems and new software across the estate.
Home Depot senior vice president for operations Troy Rice says: 'FAST will improve the speed, accuracy and service levels at the check-out for millions of our customers and set the standard for the industry.'
NCR is providing much of the technology for FAST, including its FastLane self-checkout systems, with operating systems from Microsoft.
The solution incorporates performance software that can evaluate cashier's skills and benchmark each store's front-end operations against company standards.
