Sales of digital books are soaring in the UK, according to figures from The Publishers Association.
Last year, sales of ebooks and audio book downloads in the “general titles” category, which includes novels and consumer titles, rose from £4m to £16m.
Sales were buoyed by titles such as Stephen Fry’s The Fry Chronicles and Stieg Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy.
Richard Mollett, chief executive of The Publishers Association – which acts for 70% of the market – told The Telegraph: “The sector’s performance in 2010 clearly shows that digital publishing is growing at an impressive rate in whichever part of the sector you choose to look.”
However, he said the print market is popular and the figures suggest print and digital books will co-exist in the future.
