York-based independent fashion retailer Sara Coggles has recently developed and opened a store in a 4,000 sq ft (370 sq m) 17th century building in the city centre. Previously, the site was residential, and the retailer was anxious to maintain the building's historic structure. A central part of the design brief was that the store should be flexible, while maintaining a relationship with the original Sarah Coggles store, also in York. Architectural design repairs were carried out using traditional materials, along with plasterwork, stainless steel and structural glass. Carey Jones Architects carried out the redesign of the space and also designed the store's bespoke fixtures. Store lighting was designed by Erco and shopfitting was courtesy of Sanderson's.
