The 91 remaining Blockbuster UK stores will all close by December 16 resulting in 808 job losses, the retailer’s administrator has revealed.
Blockbuster joint administrators Simon Thomas and Nick O’Reilly of Moorfields Corporate Recovery said it had proved impossible to find a buyer of the business as a going concern.
All stock will be cleared by December 15 in a Sale with discounts of up to 90%.
Blockbuster UK plunged into administration in October for the second time this year. After collapsing in January it was acquired in March by restructuring specialist Gordon Brothers, but difficulties in securing a licensing agreement to use the Blockbuster name online made a turnaround impossible.
The administrators said: “It is with regret that we have to make today’s announcement. Unfortunately, we were unable to secure a buyer for the group as a going concern and as a result had to take the regrettable action to close the remaining stores.”
At the time of its collapse into administration in October, Blockbuster employed 2,000 people and had 264 stores.
