Property developers London & Stamford and British Land have outlined plans to turn Meadowhall shopping centre, Sheffield, into the UK’s largest out-of-town shopping destination.
The developers are looking to expand the retail space of the shopping centre by 700,000 sq ft, with plans for a new Ikea next to the existing site, a homewares development similar to Manchester’s Trafford Centre and a boosted food offering.
The new developments are unlikely to be connected to the current building, but will expand Meadowhall’s overall retail space from 1.4m sq ft to more than 2m sq ft, according to The Daily Telegraph.
Last week, British Land said it was gearing up to start new retail developments for the first time since the recession. Retail rents grew 0.7% in the year to March 31 as retailers flocked to open in regional centres with large catchment areas, such as Meadowhall.
