It is the sharpest drop in week-on-week numbers since the end of February, according to shopper traffic monitor FootFall. Analysts at the company were keen to play down the fall as a manifestation of unfavourably large comparatives the previous week.
However, year-on-year comparisons have also shrunk, from 9.3 per cent growth the week before, to 5.5 per cent growth for the seven days ending June 6.
FootFall market analyst Sheelah Turner said: 'The peak the previous week was school half term and we typically see a big drop off afterwards. We expect steady growth in the next few weeks as we head towards the start of summer school holidays in July. The warmer weather this weekend should hopefully spark a buying surge for summer items.'
