Darty to close loss-making Spanish stores
Darty is closing its stores in Spain. The retailer is cutting off the loss-making arm as it plans to focus on its more successful stores in France, Belgium and the Netherlands.All 43 Spanish stores will be closed by June at an estimated cost of E30m (£25.5m).

Gross sales rise at grocer Mercadona
Mercadona’s gross sales rose 7% to E17.8bn (£15.55bn) in 2012. Net income also increased 7% to E508m (£443.7m).The grocer invested E650m (£567.7m) to open 60 stores and hired 4,000 employees during the year, giving it a total staff count of 74,000.Mercadona is reportedly postponing global expansion.

Schwarz Group ramps up Spanish investment
Germany-based Schwarz Group is ramping up its operations in Spain and has earmarked a sum of E120m (£103.6m)for investments in its Spanish Lidl network this year.That is 20% more than last year, when the retailer opened 14 stores and remodelled another 65 in Spain.

Carrefour to relaunch Carrefour Baby range
French retailer Carrefour is to relaunch its Carrefour Baby private-label range in Spain.At present the retailer offers 37 SKUs in baby food and 21 infant hygiene items. The initiative is likely to be a reaction to Spanish supermarket operator Mercadona, which has recorded strong growth in the category.
