Frasers has acquired a stake in Hudson Malta, a premier retail and distribution business based in Malta, as the retail group looks to spread its international footprint.
The group, which owns brands such as Sports Direct and Flannels, said it had acquired a “significant non-controlling shareholding in Hudson Malta” – a Malta-based premier retailer and distributor with operations across 36 African countries.
The deal will launch Sports Direct and USC (Frasers’ own apparel brand) into the Maltese market, with the first store opening planned for 2025, as well as the “opportunities for the launch and expansion of Sports Direct across Northwest Africa, leveraging Hudson’s extensive distribution network and market knowledge”.
The retailer said this reflects its commitment to expand internationally and marks the start of a “long-term strategic partnership” in the Malta and North Africa region.
Frasers added that the deal includes the possibility for it “to make additional investments in Hudson in the future, which could lead to Frasers gaining a controlling interest in Hudson longer term” subject to certain specific conditions.
