Mountain Warehouse said it plans to open a further 50 stores next year, according to The Times.

The new stores are expected to pop up across Britain and overseas and an additional 50 stores would bring the retailer’s store estate to a total of around 370 across nine countries.

Mountain Warehouse founder and chief executive Mark Neale told the newspaper: “We think there is lots of life left in lots of our high streets.

“All that death of the high street stuff has been a bit overdone. We’re definitely very positive about physical retail at the moment.

“We’ve been opening lots of much bigger stores and relocating some smaller, more legacy stores.

“The changeable weather is always quite good for us. Sales of waterproof jackets have been reasonably robust but we’ve also got a good range of stuff for people going on holiday: shorts, t-shirts, wetsuits and changing robes.”

This comes after news last week that the retailer had snapped up US sports brand Eastern Mountain Sports in a $10m (£7.6m) rescue deal.

Mountain Warehouse acquired key assets of the business and saved 100 jobs at the retailer as a result.

Pre-tax profits at the group also reached £26.2m during the year.

Mountain Warehouse’s online marketplace, which stocks more than 320 third-party brands, takes credit for almost a third of its revenue to date.
