Poundland to begin extensive transformation of former Wilko stores

Poundland will begin the transformation to turn 11 former Wilko stores into new Poundland shops, adding chilled and frozen food, clothing and homeware.

A former Wilko store getting its Poundland makeover

The discount retailer acquired up to 71 former Wilko sites last year and the group will start the store makeovers in the next few weeks.

The next round of refurbishments will be in Leigh, Manchester; Peterlee in County Durham; and Ammanford in Carmarthenshire – with work to be completed by January 27.

Other store transformations will be completed in Leicester, Greenock, Worcester, Chepstow, Stevenage, Hull, Thornaby and Bicester.

Individual store makeovers will vary, but once finished all sites will be “the best and most up-to-date” Poundland stores they can be.

Every transformed Poundland will offer customers the most comprehensive ranges possible, including chilled and frozen food, as well as clothing and homeware ranges from parent company Pepco.

There will be more baby and kids clothing than before, fresh signage, updated colleague areas, and £3 meal deals.

Poundland retail director Darren Kay said: “Customers reacted positively to the re-opening of these former Wilko stores as Poundlands in 2023, but as we said at the time, each were only beginning their Poundland journeys.

“Through this new investment, we’ll give each of these stores a top-to-bottom makeover to make them the best Poundland stores they can be.
