Waitrose has added its name to the growing list of those objecting to a major development in Surrey.
The retailer has taken a stand against the proposed regeneration of Hersham Green Shopping Centre in Walton-on-Thames, citing concerns about the loss of parking and the impact on operations at its store there.
According to the BBC, a spokesperson from Hersham’s developer Quadrant Repurpose said the firm was “naturally disappointed” by Waitrose’s objection and that it remained in dialogue with the retailer.
The developer has vowed to invest £6m in the store and other retail units to ensure their survival if the development scheme, which includes the generation of a shopping centre and six-storey senior living accommodation, is granted approval by Elmbridge Borough Council.
The plans have come under fire from locals concerned that the reduction in car parking spaces included in the plan would impact access to the centre and a local doctor’s surgery.
“Waitrose’s principal concern is the significant loss of car parking proposed will inevitably lead to customers choosing to shop elsewhere and result in a loss of trade for Waitrose and other retailers,” said consultants Glanville.
Nearly 3,000 letters of objection have been sent about the development.
