Etail giant Amazon is in talks to lease 20 Boeing Co 767 jets to start its own air-delivery service, according to reports.

The retailer is seeking to avoid delays from third-party carriers, the Seattle Times reported, citing cargo-industry sources.

Analysts have suggested Amazon could deliver on behalf of other companies too, piling pressure on existing fulfilment firms and cargo carriers, already feeling the strain as the growth in online shopping soars across the globe.

Amazon has approached Air Transport Services Group, Atlas Air and Kalitta Air, the newspaper reported.

Amazon is already thought to be running a trial in Ohio, US, which involves the retailer leasing jets to deliver some goods.

But it is expected to ramp this up next month and start a larger air-cargo operation.

ATSG and Kalitta Air could not be immediately reached for comment, according to Reuters. Amazon, Boeing, and Atlas Air declined to comment.
