Home goods and furniture giant Ikea has launched a trial of “next generation” lockers in Tesco stores.

Ikea lockers

Ikea is testing collection lockers at three Tesco stores

The new lockers enable Ikea customers to collect their orders – including bulky items

At each of the three trial Tesco shops – the Tesco Dereham Extra in Norfolk, and superstores in Cambridge and Werrington, Peterborough –  Ikea customers within 100km will be able to collect their purchases 24 hours a day from one of 35 differently sized lockers that Ikea said “can accommodate furniture of almost all sizes”.

Orders placed before 6.30am will be available from the same day and collection slots will be bookable up to five days in advance, subject to availability.

The new lockers come on top of approximately 100 Ikea mobile pick-up points at Tesco stores across the UK. Another 100 of those are planned. The mobile pick-up points offer Ikea customers two daily time slots but the new ones allow goods to be picked up any time, “providing more flexibility and improved accessibility for customers”.

Ikea UK country customer fulfilment manager Jakob Bertilsson said: “We’re continuously exploring new ways to connect with our customers and this trial marks a significant milestone in our ambition to become even closer to our customers. We’re excited to extend our successful partnership with Tesco to bring these next-generation lockers to our customers in the Norfolk and Cambridgeshire areas and provide a range of services that are affordable, accessible and offer the best possible experience.”

Tesco assets and estates director Simon Williams said: “We’re pleased to be building on our existing partnership with Ikea to trial innovative ways of improving the shopping experience for customers. Our Ikea-manned click-and-collect points are already widely used and we hope that these convenient and forward-thinking new automated lockers are just as well received.”

The Werrington lockers opened last month. The other two sites will open soon.
