Measuring sustainability: How well do you really know your environmental impact?
Panel
There isn’t a retailer trading today that doesn’t want to reduce their energy consumption and carbon footprint while simultaneously creating operational efficiencies and cost savings.
Yet the only way retailers can achieve this is by taking control and understanding their retailer’s environmental impact.
Don’t know it? Don’t panic.
In this panel, we will get to grips with how to use data to get a true picture of your business’ environmental impact and then take action to eliminate waste, reduce energy consumption and make better, ROI-boosting decisions. You will hear from two retail leaders alongside an industry expert.

Engaging customers on ESG:
Where to invest to drive real progress
Panel
In the words of British Retail Consortium chief Helen Dickinson: “Putting sustainability at the heart of retail isn’t virtue signalling; it’s vital.”
Sustainability is not a nice-to-have, but a necessity. And with consumers looking to businesses to act – and act now – retailers must invest in high-impact solutions that bring customers on the journey with them.
This means embracing innovative technologies to drive real transformation.
But, with so many areas of focus, which solutions should retailers be investing in? Our panel of retail leaders and industry experts will share their own stories of what’s worked, what hasn’t and where their ESG investment priorities lie.
Speakers include:
- George Barratt, Sustainability Manager (Circular Economy), John Lewis Partnership
- Barbara Colombo, Sustainability Director UK and Ireland, L'Oreal
- Dorothée D’Herde, Director of Responsible Business, Kingfisher
- Nicola Harrison, Director of Commercial Content, Retail Week (moderator)

Going circular: Why retail’s out and rental and resale are in
Panel
Consumers’ rising awareness of sustainability and pursuit of lower prices post-pandemic has created a retail revolution: rental and resale are going mainstream.
From clothes and shoes to furniture and sporting goods, retailers across the globe are changing their business models to embrace rental and resale to achieve their circular ambitions.
Indeed, in fashion alone, circular business models encompassing rental and resale are set to take 23% of the global fashion market by 2030, according to a March 2023 study by Bloomberg Intelligence.
In this panel, we’re bringing together leaders already making headway in the rental and resale community to understand the scope of the opportunity, the role of partnerships in making it a reality and where traditional retail fits in.
Speakers include:
- Chris Allen, Sustainability Director, Decathlon
- Clara Eisenberg, Legal and Sustainability Director, Dune London
- Beth Bloomfield, Senior Analyst, Retail Week (moderator)
11.50am-12.10pm
Electricity: The real road to sustainability?
In conversation with...
From Tesco and Ikea implementing charging points in car parks to Amazon trialling electric cargo fleets and Asos trialling electric buses for employee travel, more retailers are embracing electricity to achieve their sustainability ambitions.
As these retailers lead the way, how can other businesses follow suit? And what are the best, and most affordable, solutions to invest in as the industry looks to a low-emissions future?
We’re joined by a retailer using electricity to get ahead, alongside an industry expert, to answer these questions and understand how to make the transition.
Speakers include:
- Jakob Bertilsson, Country Customer Fulfilment Manager, Ikea
12.10pm-12.30pm
The Big Pitch: Meet the sustainability innovators making a difference
What if we could learn from and be inspired by brands that are inherently sustainable and were created with responsible retailing in mind?
Returning for a second year, Retail Week presents The Big Pitch where we’ll bring together four innovative businesses who will give a quick-fire overview of their sustainable practices, how this has attracted consumers and generated returns, and what their KPIs look like.
You will hear from:
