Fingerprint-enabled payments and voice-enabled ordering were ranked as the top two cool retail technologies by UK shoppers.
According to RichRelevance’s Creepy or Cool survey of over 3,500 consumers across the UK, France, Germany and the US found that over half (56%) of UK shoppers deem fingerprint scanning to pay for goods and authorise home deliveries a cool retail technology, up 11% year-on-year.
Smart mirrors also ranked highly UK consumers, with 45% of shoppers giving the in-store technology a cool vote.
The majority of UK shoppers also proved to be the receptive to exchanging their personal data for a better customer experience – 80% of domestic consumers said they would be happy to do so, second only to French shoppers at 85%.
However, contactless payments proved divisive – while 40% of UK respondents said the technology was cool, nearly a third (31%) found it creepy.
Facial recognition technology and AI-powered product recommendations also turned off UK shoppers – with 55% and 54% of UK respondents deeming the technologies creepy.
RichRelevance’s chief marketing officer Diane Kegley said: “We are seeing shoppers across the board become more comfortable with technologies that personalise shopping on a one-to-one basis, such as voice recognition, digital product recommendations in changing rooms, and fingerprint scanning for payments.
“The one area where consumers still seem to have real concerns is AI. Companies’ communication around their consumer facing AI initiatives, such as customer service chatbots, clearly needs addressing from a shopper standpoint.”
