Waitrose will launch its first cashless store this summer in a bid to target the rising popularity of contactless payments.

The supermarket’s first cashless store is to open this summer at Sky’s new office in Osterley, which will employ 3,500 staff.

The store will be the second smallest in Waitrose’s estate at 1,400 sq ft and will comprise five self-service checkouts.

Shoppers will only be able to pay for items using their card or mobile device.

Waitrose convenience director Jackie Wharton said: “Opening on the Sky campus is an exciting opportunity for us to respond to how customers wish to shop in this flagship workplace setting.

“We’ll look forward to exploring other opportunities like this in the future.”

The cashless store’s stock, which has been selected based on feedback from Sky employees, will focus on food-to-go products as well as mini health and beauty items.

The outlet will be Waitrose’s first office-based store opening in 18 years and will create 20 new jobs.
